Apple’s latest PC vs. Mac ads would like you to believe Microsoft is spending almost all of its money on advertising instead of improving Windows. Instead of the usual funny jab at Windows Vista, Apple is making accusations as to where Microsoft is spending its money. It’s no secret Microsoft is investing significantly in improving Windows with the upcoming Windows 7 release and Windows Vista SP2 but it’s less clear exactly how much it is spending compared to Apple.  Since Apple’s ads are criticizing Microsoft on how much they spend on advertising, how much does Apple spend as well? And how much does that compare to improving their products?

The answers to both of these questions can be found in the annual financial reports both companies are required to file with the SEC.

The Facts:

Apple according to the fiscal 2007 Annual Report

  • Net Sales: $24.006 Billion
  • Advertising: $467 Million
  • R&D: $782 Million
  • Net Income (Profit): $3.9 Billion

Microsoft according to the fiscal 2007 Annual Report

  • Net Sales: $51.122 Billion
  • Advertising: $1.33 Billion
  • R&D: $7.121 Billion
  • Net Income (Profit): $14.065 Billion

If you read the financial reports you will find that both Apple and Microsoft spend a significant amount on Advertising and R&D but since Microsoft is a much larger company it is important to break down the numbers into comparable units. To do that I broke the numbers down to how much each company spends per $1 of sales revenue.

For each $1 of sales Apple spends:

  • 1.9 cents on Advertising
  • 3.3 cents on R&D

For each $1 of sales Microsoft spends:

  • 2.6 cents on Advertising
  • 13.9 cents on R&D

It is important to point out that these numbers are not broken down on how much each company spends on their desktop products alone but for comparing Microsoft to Apple they give us a good proportion of Advertising to R&D.

As the numbers show Microsoft spends more on Advertising than Apple but they also spend five times more on R&D. Exactly the opposite of what the Apple commercial suggests.

And since Apple brought it up, they spend only .7 cents less per sales $1 on Advertising than Microsoft and spend a fraction of what Microsoft spends on improving its products.

Way to make it sound so minute. You say "only .7 cents less". If it were only $0.70 total, that would be one thing... or 0.70 for every thousand it would be better. But it's 0.70 PER DOLLAR. When you're talking 1.33 BILLION DOLLARS?!?! $0.70 is a LOT of money. Be logical please.

@NCJoshuaG, Microsoft is a much larger company than Apple so comparing raw advertising or R&D numbers is useless. Clearly Microsoft's numbers are going to be larger in both cases because of the size of the company. As of today Microsoft has a market capitalization of about $171.9 billion and Apple $115.6 billion. The only way to compare the two companies of different sizes is to calculate the ratio of advertising and R&D per each sales dollar so you can compare apples to apples. Remember, the point of this article was to examine Apple's claim that Microsoft spends little on improving their products and almost all on advertising. I think this article has been successful in proving Apple's claim is misleading and false when you look at the actual ratios. Yes, .7 cents difference is a big number when you apply the ratio to Net Sales but no matter how you look at it the outcome is the same. Microsoft spends $6.339 billion more on improving their products than Apple and $863 million more on advertising on $27.116 billion in additional net sales. Exactly the opposite of what the Apple commercial suggests.

@NCJoshuaG, .7 cents is not $0.70 it is $0.007. That's seven tenths of a penny less per dollar of sales. Anyway you look at it, 7/10 of 1¢ is not much.
Be logical please.

Of course MS has to spend that much on R&D, anyone with a defective product would have to do so. Then there is the FUD aspect that started with IBM, was used extensively by MS and now Apple is following suit. I do notice however that Apple has not been sued by MS over their PC-Mac ads. I wonder why that is? Your dollar and cents arguments are interesting but at the end of the day, a Mac is clearly a superior machine as is my PC with Linux on it.

To say MAC is clearly a superior machine is just an opinion by a a person with horse blinds on. Get over yourself already, and get the hell out of the fast lane with your gay prius.
