Adjust Taskbar Preview Hover Delay

Published 2/17/2009 in Windows 7 User Interface Tweaks by Steve Sinchak with 31,117 views

Taskbar previews in Windows 7 have been updated and include new functionality. Users can close windows right from the preview window and even view full size previews with Aero Peek. The changes are very useful but all are depending on the amount of time you hover over the taskbar icon with your mouse. After a set period, 400 milliseconds, the taskbar preview is shown. For some, the required hover time is way too long.

Here is how you can customize the hover time just for the taskbar:

  1. Click on the Start Button and type in Regedit and hit Enter.
  2. Navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced.
  3. Right click on Advanced and select New DWORD and name the new value "ExtendedUIHoverTime".
  4. Right click on ExtendedUIHoverTime and select Modify.
  5. Switch to Decimal base and enter in your new number.  The default is 400 milliseconds. I like to set mine to 100 for a 100 millisecond delay.
  6. Once changed click OK and restart the explorer process or restart your computer.

Alternatively you can customize the global system hover time that will adjust the hover delay for everything on your system including taskbar icons, start menu shortcuts, etc:

  1. Click on the Start Button and type in regedit and hit Enter.
  2. Navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse.
  3. Right click on MouseHoverTime and select Modify.
  4. Set the new value. The default value is 400 milliseconds.
  5. Once changed, click OK and restart your computer.

Thanks to Drazen M. and c.kolbicz for the suggestions!

actually this setting does change the mouse hover time in every application. you can notice a faster submenu opening startmenu for example. the correct registry entry for only adjusting the taskbar preview window is here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
ExtendedUIHoverTime DWORD

as the feature to disable the previews in rc1 was removed, you can also use this setting to make them appear after a really long time and so halfway disable em :-)

@c.kolbicz, Thanks for the tip. I updated the article. You may also be interested in the dword ThumbnailLivePreviewHoverTime under the same key. I'm going to write an quick article about that next.

i already wrote of these :-) here is the info:

DisablePreviewWindow DWORD 1 or 0

normally if you hoover a taskbar preview thumbnail window the other windows are getting transparent and only the big version of the thumbnail is shown on the desktop. set this to 1 to disable this feature.

ThumbnailLivePreviewHoverTime DWORD 0-?

this is the timeout to make other windows transparent when a tasbar preview thumbnail is hovered.

enjoy and thanks for updating and this nice site :-)

I've just stepped up to the x64 version. With these tips, are they DWORD or QWORD when working with the x64 registry????

Steve R, they are still DWORD on x64.

Also note that setting "ExtendedUIHoverTime" value data to a larger number (10000 milliseconds) would work if you want to prevent the display of taskbar thumbnails. It would appear only after 10 seconds.

I have a question about this, but maybe it doesn't exist the posibility to change this value. Anyway here it is: How can I decrease the time that the preview dissapears ? I don't need it to appear faster, but instead I'm annoyed by the fact it dissapears a little bit too slow.

I'm looking to adjust how quickly the previews disappear after mousing off of them. Anyone know know to adjust that?

I love using alt-tab to switch between open windows but it drives me nuts that when you first press alt-tab there is a significant delay before the first open window is previewed (and the others are made transparent). Subsequent presses of alt-tab once the task switcher is open cause the next window to display instantaneously so there must be some way of reducing the delay on the initial click of alt-tab. Somebody help. This is driving me nuts. Any idea what registry value can be changed to reduce the initial delay on the alt-tab showing an aero peek of the next open app?

to skydyer: I've been trying a product called "vista switcher" which I'm pretty happy with, which gives a better Alt-Tab. Works for Win7 too. http://www.ntwind.com/software/vistaswitcher.html
And no, I don't work for them :)

This doesn't work for Windows 7 Ultimate.....(x64 OEM Edition)

Is there anyway of ACTUALLY disabling thumbnail previews in Windows 7?

Does anybody know of a way to make the thumbnails stay visible longer for users that are a bit slower??

c.kolbicz deserves a big thanks.

I was wondering why menushowdelay tweak wasnt working and its because the MouseHoverTime exists by default at 400ms, that setting as he said is a global setting and overides menushowdelay. So anyone who wants to tweak all their delays custom should specifically delete MouseHoverTime or rename it to something like MouseHoverTimeDISABLED.
