Apple complains about latest Microsoft ads

Published 7/16/2009 in Microsoft News by Steve Sinchak with 3,307 views

It appears Microsoft's latest "Laptop Hunter" campaigns highlighting the value of PCs are getting under Apple's skin. At the Worldwide Partner Conference, Microsoft COO Kevin Turner spoke about a recent call from Apple Lawyers when talking about the success of the new campaign:

And you know why I know they're working? Because two weeks ago we got a call from the Apple legal department saying, hey -- this is a true story -- saying, "Hey, you need to stop running those ads, we lowered our prices." They took like $100 off or something. It was the greatest single phone call in the history that I've ever taken in business.

I did cartwheels down the hallway. At first I said, "Is this a joke? Who are you?" Not understanding what an opportunity. And so we're just going to keep running them and running them and running them.

After years of portraying Windows is junk with questionable statements of their own Apple screams mercy the first time Microsoft finally lands a punch?  Come on Apple, this is the game you started.

FUD. Not even astroturf, but pure FUD. To bad Apple didn't lock half the world's OEM's into an exclusivity deal, huh? With all of Microsoft's dirty laundry, you're going to point fingers at Apple? Gimme a break.

Of course, neither Microsoft nor Apple can compete with Linux.

I have to agree with Runaway1956

neither apple nor microsoft come close to Linux, not only do they lack the freedom and features they also lack the friendliness. They spy on you and say what you can and can't do, Linux just is there for you like a good OS should be. Not to mention the vast amount of Linux that are open source with no license to purchase. There really is no need for MS or Apple any more.

Your computer are so cheap cause they're straight junk. I had a mac for 5 years with no problems..but my grandma brought me a windows base computer and I have only had it for 3 months with tons of problems. I don't see why you're doing the cartwheels. The only reason people by them is because they are cheaper but they complain about them all the time. One day Macs will rule the world.

Clueless fanboys that spring out of nowhere every time a Microsoft/Apple article hits the net makes me want to puke. As a computer/network tech and network admin for the past 13 years, I've used them all...and I can tell you with an unbiased opinion that EVERY operating system has it's ups and downs.

Microsoft has always had the attitude that it knows what's best for its users but it has gotten much better over time and has learned to listen to its users. Then there was the 'you're going to be wowed by Vista' fiasco. Luckily with Windows 7 and Server 2008, MS seems to have done a complete 180...lowered hardware requirements, dramatically lowered resource usage, increased stability and added a few much needed usability perks. I have been running Windows 7 RTM since the day it was released to MSDN and have not encountered a single bug, compatibility issue or stability problem since then on any of the eight test machines at work or my three machines at home.

However, in true Microsoft fashion, they are still slow on fixing bugs, security flaws, etc. and guilty of often not following through on releasing new technology (or the support thereof) as promised or in a timely manner.

Mac, on the other hand, is also a great OS. Reliable, fast, user-friendly and quick on the draw with fixes, updates and usability upgrades. However, Mac's major flaws are that once you buy into it, you are trapped within its 'walled garden' with little or no way out (we all saw where AOL ended up with that approach). Then there is the ridiculous price tag that comes along with it.

Mac fanboys always want to comment that 'You're using Windows because you're running a cheap/junk computer' blah blah blah. Explain to me how I was able to build my own computer for less than $1200 that is faster than any Mac in production (at $2500+) with more RAM, more raw processing power, faster graphics, 5TB of HDD space in RAID0, all for less than half the price. Not to mention that I can easily upgrade my hardware at any time for a mere fraction of what it would take to upgrade the viciously proprietary Mac. I'm not cheap...just intelligent enough to know which is the better bargain. Then there is security. With a bachelors in Network Security & Forensics, I will be the first to tell you that Windows is the highest at risk of the big three...but not for the reasons that Mac users would have you believe. Hackers and malware developers do what they do primarily for bragging rights, monetary gain and/or for knowledge. That being the (indisputable) case, why would they go after an OS that controls only a small sliver of the OS market when they can instead go after the one operating system that they know everyone is using and will cause the most havoc? It's security by obscurity...a.k.a. false security. Mac only seems more secure because hackers, malware developers and security consultants have only spent a small fraction of time on it compared to Windows. If you care to dispute that, then explain why Mac has been the FIRST to fall at every Pwn2Own contest for three years running (usually in less than 2 minutes)...followed by Windows (Linux has not been cracked successfully in a couple of years). Then there is Linux. It has very few, if any, of the flaws mentioned above...save one. Most flavors of Linux are far from being user-friendly enough to be considered viable as a desktop OS for the new or inexperienced user. However, to the experienced user and to those that take the time to learn it, Linux is a godsend...free of all the corporate garbage imposed by MS and Mac. Regardless of what you biased fanboys tell yourselves to help you sleep at night, no single operating system is better than the other. Each and ever operating system has its flaws. The consumer simply has to make himself aware of these flaws and make his choice based upon his unique wants and needs.

I just got a computer on 10/21/2009, (laptop so to say), and I'm running a 1.79ghz processor and 382mb of RAM, With Windows XP Pro. I have Trend Micro Internet Security Pro running. I have had NO viruses since I installed my OS. I Absolutely despise Macs, Because of the price tag, and cost of software. I agree windows has its' flaws. But in the get go, Windows XP, and Windows 7 are by far the BEST OS Microsoft has EVER released. I have Above average IT knowledge & Experience, I know when to spot a Phishing scam, and I always report this. Linux on the other hand, I absolutely adore. I love working with it. I almost experimented with ever major distribution. I tend to buy a computer with a very Sturdy processor, memory, motherboard, and peripherals. I have a server in my room running Windows Server 2003 standard, I also have Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition, all the Server version of windows works very well. So please, all the users out there saying that ALL windows PCs are junk, This is NOT necessary, If you buy a 17-20" laptop for $400, then yes you are paying for junk. Not even would I pay for it, I will pay more than $1299 for this size laptop. If you've been in the IT industry, most IT Professionals will tell you that Mac is really not a good buy for the things you get, Though Apple Invented the FIRST PC, This does not make them the best there is. I know a lot of people and only about .05% of them own a Mac. I sincerely apologize if I offend, upset, tick off, etc., anyone. What I just said Is based on what I have experienced with Macs, Wins, and Linux.
