Today at 2009 International CES, Microsoft Research released Songsmith, a new software program that generates musical accompaniment to match whatever a person sings. The software application makes it easy for everyone to create original music just by using their voice, whether they’re shower-stall singers who want to make tunes for fun or serious musicians looking for a scratchpad to capture their creative ideas.

A free trial download of Songsmith is available on the Microsoft Research Web site, and a full version can be purchased at the online Microsoft Store, providing musicians of all skill levels with a fun, affordable way to express themselves.

In engineering Windows 7, our goal is to deliver the capabilities and features users want from a Windows PC while reducing power consumption over previous releases. Windows already provides a rich set of energy saving features, including the ability to turn off the display and automatically put the system to sleep when the user is not interacting with the computer. Although Windows is responsible for managing the power state of many devices, including the processor, hard drive and display, the remaining devices and software running on the computer have just as much (if not more) impact on power consumption and battery life.  This is a challenge for everyone contributing to the PC experience.

Yesterday many Microsoft Zune 30 Gb versions suffered from crippling bug caused by the way the device accounts for leap years, Microsoft said.

In a statement on the Zune website posted late on Wednesday, the company blamed "a bug in the internal clock driver related to the way the device handles a leap year," adding: "The issue should be resolved over the next 24 hours as the time change moves to January 1, 2009."

U.S. patent application number 20080319910, published on Christmas Day, details Microsoft's vision of a situation where a "standard model" of PC is given away or heavily subsidized by someone in the supply chain. The end user then pays to use the computer, with charges based on both the length of usage time and the performance levels utilized, along with a "one-time charge."
